Yesterday provided some very interesting conditions on all fronts, from the cloud cover, to the snow surface, each offered a unique challenge to the athletes. When we first loaded the chair around 12:30 PM, it looked like it was going to be a gray day, but as we neared the top of the mountain, it was clear that this was a case of inversion- very low clouds allowing the peaks to emerge above the cloud ceiling. Skiing down through the cloud however proved to be rather intimidating as the slightly bumpy terrain appeared to be perfectly smooth. Athletes and coaches alike were sure to slow way down until they came out of the cloud further down the mountain.
On the last portion of the trail, coaches set an apex drill for athletes to begin to hone in their line and strategy. An apex drill consists of brushes set in the place of gates, but rather than setting one brush to replace one gate, coaches set two brushes in order to ensure that athletes are making nice, round arcs throughout the turn phase.
Today looks to be a bit gloomy with rain in the forecast, so athletes have been informed to bring their rain jackets, an extra pair of gloves, and cheerful personalities ready for another productive day of skiing!
